I just changed my writing habit for the 17th time in under three years.
And it’s not that I’m bad at sticking to things — I flat-out didn’t have a good strategy.
Bad system = Inconsistency
Inconsistency is the first sign a dream will come crashing down. And my writing has crash-landed back on Earth a few times. I’ve taken several month-long breaks and have even considered pivoting to another dream.
I’m still here, and that’s all that matters.
I learned a new system from Dan Koe
The idea is simple:
Start your day by filling your mind through reading, learning, and socializing.
Take a break and empty your mind with walks, workouts, or journaling.
End your day by using your mind with deep work, art, or writing.
Think of it like filling an empty glass, then pouring it out. Our brains work much the same and need a process that keeps them engaged not too overloaded or unused.
I’ve done this daily for the last three weeks, and am excited because I think I’ve finally found a system that works for me.
How I’d Learn to Write If I Could Start Over
Systemizing a writing process, you can work at consistently is crucial.
But I didn’t know this when I was first starting.
I wrote about this, and four other things I’d do if I had to start my online writing career over again.
