If You’re Reading This, Then You’re Part of a Small Batch of Rather Cool People
Reading is exhausting. Writing is exhausting. We do both anyway.
12,100 people search "Medium login"(where I write most of my articles) on Google every month.
It seems like a significant number, but when you compare that to Twitter, Facebook, or TikTok numbers, that number is hardly a drop in the bucket.
You could be anywhere right now.
You could be on LinkedIn wading through the sea of professional business do-gooders writing cringe-worthy posts about your work-life balance.
You could be on TikTok, scrolling with dead eyes, and realize it's 1:34 AM, and you have to get up in five hours. Now you're mad you've wasted your time and will be a wreck during the all-hands meeting tomorrow.
Instead, you're here, reading an article written by a total stranger.
Why did you come here?
They don't ask how just how many.
That's what I told myself when I won my fantasy football game by .25 points last week. The difference between a good and bad Sunday for me was a quarter.
I engage in these rather pointless things, yet we're here on a blogging social media site to share morning, afternoon, or evening reads together.
Think about what brought you here. There's something different in the air here than on another social media site.
While you think, I'll tell you why I'm here.
We come from all sorts of backgrounds.
“Be a journalism major; you don't have to be a journalist after college."
After graduating, I took that to heart and tried everything except writing.
I worked on set for high-budget commercials in Hollywood, co-founded a beverage company, and taught a kindergarten class during the pandemic.
Luckily, I'm not tired yet. I'm 27 as of the time of writing, and I'm just starting to figure out what I'm supposed to do with myself.
Recently, I learned that I could do anything.
I know this because, in every job I've ever had, I've jumped in with a full head of steam. I didn't know what I was doing until I started.
Now I'm in a new but exciting field for people with diversified skills. I can write and edit scripts. I can shoot and edit photos. I'm creative, so I'm trusted to develop social media ideas for my team.
I'm a part of a pioneering group of creatives who don't exactly have a job description. We gather leads through whatever means necessary.
I do all these things, yet I write online for strangers, essentially for free. That's crazy talk to regular people outside our circle.
But you're in the circle.
You understand the point of all this and the hours spent writing and editing.
As I mentioned earlier, I could spend this time coming up with TikTok skits. It would be much easier to build an audience there, after all. One video could garner 5,000 followers in a day.
But we know the difference between a follower and a fan.
We'd rather spend our time on something impactful. Something we know we can connect with — stories told by regular folks.
Social media leaves you cold and empty, like eating a Mcdonald's hamburger.
You ate, but you're not satisfied.
If you're reading this, you're a part of a small but rather sick group of individuals who choose to embrace a challenge.
Reading is exhausting. Writing is exhausting. Yet we do both anyway.
